ICDO’s ‘Kalan Je La’an:
Following the Maya Voice’ - Phase I

Maya Ceremony

A traditional Maya cosmology ceremony held at Universidad Intercultural de Maya Quintana Roo (UIMQRoo) in Jose Maria Morelos kicked off the first phase of ICDO’s ‘Kalan Je La’an: Following the Maya Voice’ project on the 15th of January 2020.

The ICDO team joined close to a hundred of UIMQRoo Maya students and professors as they embarked on the procession. The participants wore their sacred colors, performed ritual music and dance, and shared the spiritual part of their culture with the ICDO team. The ceremony took place around the sacred Ya’ache tree, an ancient symbol of life on Earth in the Maya culture, where each one of us marked the beginning of something new by planting seeds in the ground.

Signing of Memorandum Document with UIMQRoo

On the 16th of January, the signing of the memorandum document by ICDO President Josipa Palac and Rector of Universidad Intercultural Maya de Quintana Roo Rafael Antonio Pantoja Sánchez marked the official inauguration of the cooperation between UIMQRoo and ICDO on the ‘Kalan Je La’an: Following the Maya Voice’ project.

“The philosophy of UIMQRoo is to preserve Maya culture and language, which is important to us as an ideology of the university. We also work on developing degrees that support Maya culture. We face many challenges. One of them is to consolidate the university; it’s a small and young university. We have approximately 840 students, and our goal is to encourage people to attend our university. ICDO is an important organization, and in the future I hope we can make our cooperation grow bigger and stronger. We expect a lot from this cooperation: for our students and professors to learn from you and in return, for you to learn about the values and culture of this region”, said Rafael Antonio Pantoja Sánchez, UIMQRoo rector.

The mission and vision of UIMQRoo that recognize and champion all the activities that promote the study, development and strengthening of the Mayan language and culture of the Yucatan Peninsula, go hand in hand with the goal of the ICDO’s ‘Kalan Je La’an: Following the Maya Voice’ project.
